Louisville basketball has been off to a hot start to the 2026 college basketball transfer portal season. They have had three visits from top-tier portal talent, all of which have ended in a commitment to play for Pat Kelsey next season. The success has placed Louisville among the early winners of the transfer portal, much to the enjoyment of all of Card Nation.

One school just down the road from the Cards has had a completely, somewhat nightmarish start to the transfer portal season. Kentucky basketball has had a rough go of the portal the last few days, raising major concerns about head coach Mark Pope’s ability to construct a roster as well as attract top-tier talent to Lexington. The struggles of the Kentucky coaching staff have caught the attention not only of Wildcat fans but also of the national college basketball scene.

First off, the Wildcats have been unable to lock in their top targets at the start of the portal season. Tyran Stokes and Rob Wright of BYU both visited Lexington in hopes of performing a similar 2-for-1 exercise that Louisville successfully completed just this past weekend. The visits ended with both failing to commit. Furthermore, rumors about Kansas and Stokes have begun heating up once again, while Wright flew back to BYU and signed on to stay with the Cougars the next day.

The continued failures of the Kentucky coaching staff have been a sight to behold. These issues are further analyzed by the fanbase when they see their rivals performing at incredibly high levels with their roster constructions. Louisville has had no issues sealing the deal with its recruits. BYU has stolen not only Rob Wright from Kentucky’s fingers, but also presumed returnee Collin Chandler just a few days ago. It also appears that St. John’s is the frontrunner for former Kentucky Wildcat Mo Dioubate, a hit to the roster from none other than Mark Pope’s mentor, Rick Pitino.

Kentucky has plenty of funding and availability, so it will have no trouble filling its roster. However, it is becoming apparent that this roster is unlikely to have many top-tier talents leading the way. While, for Kelsey and Louisville they landed the No. 1 transfer in Flory Bidunga, the No. 16 overall transfer in Jackson Shelstad, and a 4-star transfer in Karter Knox.

In a pivotal year for Mark Pope in his Kentucky coaching career, this start is less than ideal. On the flipside, if the roster constructions continue along their current paths for both Kentucky and Louisville, the rivalry matchup at Rupp Arena later this year should be another incredibly fun experience for Card nation.
