Louisville’s 2025-26 season didn’t go how many Cardinals fans had hoped for. Louisville basketball was bounced in the second round of the Big Dance, when they entered the season with Final Four dreams and expectations. The Cardinals were once ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation in early November, but largely because of Mikel Brown Jr. and his availability.

Making the case for Mikel Brown Jr. to stun everyone and return to Louisville next season

The 5-star freshman was one of the top players in the nation when he was fully healthy, but unfortunately, his season was marred by back injuries that forced him to miss 14 games. Brown was the second-highest commit in program history, with extremely high expectations, and, while fans are frustrated he was out this weekend, it would be a dream to see his play for Louisville in 2026-27

After the Cardinals' loss to Michigan State, Brown was seen emotional in the locker room, and when he was asked about his future plans, well, he kept the door just slightly open.

The 5-star freshman is expected to declare for the NBA Draft after his true freshman season. He is likely to be a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but some Cardinals fans will cross their fingers and pray for a return, as after the loss, he left the door cracked open for some hope.

“I have no idea,” Brown stated on his future plans. “Right now, at this moment, man, I’m just focusing on getting healthy. I don’t know what my next step is just yet. I haven’t made my decision yet.”

Brown leaves the door open for fans to hope for a return, but the expectation is that he just isn’t declaring for the draft the second the season ended. Some players declare immediately after, as Lonzo Ball did seconds after UCLA’s loss in 2017, but the majority wait, make a rational decision, and announce on social media.

There is a case for Brown to return, as he didn’t get the college basketball season he had dreamed of his entire life. He missed 14 games, including the last six games. He was out of the ACC and NCAA Tournaments, and for some, that might be a reason to return.

The Cardinals know for sure they will lose Ryan Conwell, Isaac McKneely, Kobe Rodgers, J’Vonne Hadley, and others, so it would be a dream to see Brown return and to play next to Adrian Wooley. However, with Brown recently projected as high as No. 6 by Sports Illustrated, he is likely to declare for the NBA Draft in the coming weeks. But, until that official announcement, Louisville fans will plead their case for why the 5-star should return.
