Louisville basketball learned late Wednesday night that its dream target, Milan Momcilovic, withdrew his name from the NBA Draft, making him officially available in the Transfer Portal. The Cardinals are one of the few teams connected to the Iowa State transfer so far this offseason, but their in-state rival, the Kentucky Wildcats, is another.
Louisville and Pat Kelsey given sobering Milan Momcilovic prediction from insider
It was at one point four teams as Louisville was battling, Kentucky, St. John’s, and Arizona, but it was reported Thursday morning that St. John’s is out, and Matt Norlander reported quickly after that, Arizona is a distant third. So, it appears to be an in-state battle for the 5-star transfer, and right now, many believe Kentucky is emerging as the slight favorite.
Norlander predicted Kentucky to land the 5-star over Louisville, and now, looking at some quotes from the NBA Combine, it might be time for Cardinals fans to be concerned the 5-star might go to Kentucky.
Milan Momcilovic’s Kentucky comments could suddenly be cause for Louisville concern
During the NBA Combine, Momcilovic was asked about Kentucky, and when he answered, the 5-star power forward had nothing but good things to say about Mark Pope and the Wildcats.
“I think Kentucky would be a good fit,” stated Momcilovic. “I obviously went against Pope at BYU his first year (in the Big 12), and I loved how his team played. I think we went 1-1 against them, but they killed us at their place, because they fly the ball up the court and shoot 3s. I really like the way they play.
“And obviously, Kentucky last year, he didn’t have enough shooters around him to really coach, I feel like, the way he wanted. But I think — if I were to choose Kentucky — that would be a good fit for me. I feel like I’d be a great player for him, and he’d be a good coach for me.”
Now, it is worth noting that Louisville’s roster is already a Final Four contender, but a player like Momcilovic would make the Cardinals a real threat to Duke, not just for the ACC Title but for the NCAA Title. Many are making it appear as if Kentucky is the favorite, but Louisville isn’t going away at this moment.
Norlander stated that he is being told Momcilovic’s decision will come sooner rather than later, and he predicted Momcilovic will commit before Monday. So, if Kelsey wants to make a push and try to out-recruit Pope for the 5-star transfer, now is the time.
