New NBA mock draft sets up perfect scenario for Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr.

Louisville basketball fans saw their historic 5-star commitment Mikel Brown Jr. declare for the 2026 NBA Draft. The 5-star guard ranked as high as No. 6 in the 2025 recruiting class and made history once he committed to Louisville, as he ranks as the second-highest commitment in program history.

The 5-star freshman, of course, had an up-and-down season, playing well when he was on the floor but unfortunately missing 14 games, including the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Louisville fans were trying everything in their power to get him to return, but the 5-star ultimately decided to declare for the draft.

While some may think his draft stock would drop because of his back injuries, it has actually stayed about the same. Bleacher Report updated their mock draft for the 2026 NBA Draft, and Brown is projected to be a lottery pick still and inside the top 10.

Brown is trending to be a top-seven pick in the NBA Draft, as the majority of the mock drafts have Brown going as late as No. 8. In Bleacher Report, if the NBA Lottery goes perfectly, they have Brown being selected No. 8 overall by the Atlanta Hawks, putting him on a playoff team and a legit threat in the East.

"Mikel Brown Jr.'s season ended early, prompting teams to investigate the back injury that has kept him out.

Just evaluating his play alone this season, the results were mixed, though he showcased clear NBA-type shotmaking and creativity behind the 18.2 points and 4.7 assists per game.

The ability to explode for 45 points in a game really highlights his lightning-rod style offense and confidence. But consistency was a problem for Brown. In eight of 21 games, he shot under 35.0 percent.

Between a shot diet consisting of a lot of rushed deep or contested jump shots, and a poor assist-to-turnover ratio, he may have teams picturing more of an offensive spark or specialist, rather than a lead guard/decision-maker."

The Cardinal is likely to be a lock in the top 10, and the top four are likely to be AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson. Then, after those four, it is expected to be a battle between four point guards, including Brown.

While in this scenario, Brown is going last in that next group, he gets a great opportunity by being drafted by the Hawks. Atlanta just made it to the NBA Playoffs, where they took the Knicks to six games, but they need that elite point guard.

Brown would be a perfect fit in Atlanta as he is an elite scorer who can catch fire from beyond the arc. If Atlanta brings back C.J. McCollum, Brown would have an elite veteran to grow under, but he would be a young star on this Atlanta team and could be their glaring miss.
