Louisville basketball recently landed one of the top recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, Obinna Ekezie Jr. The 5-star center reclassified and is now part of the 2026 recruiting class, where he ranks No. 14 overall and No. 1 among centers.
So, now Ekezie is a huge piece for this upcoming season and brings major depth to Louisville’s frontcourt. Louisville already added Flory Bidunga, one of the top centers in college basketball this past season, and now many believe Ekezie's commitment to Louisville shows he wants to develop and learn from Bidunga, even if that means coming off the bench or playing the power forward.
Louisville basketball's plan should terrify the ACC
The Cardinals' biggest weakness last season was their frontcourt, and Pat Kelsey made sure that won’t be their weakness in 2026-27. Kelsey added the best center from the portal, and the best center in the 2026 recruiting class, and what makes this team so dangerous is that Ekezie wants to “learn from Flory” and wants Bidunga to take him under his wing, which will ultimately make him even more dangerous.
“Typically, 5-stars don’t want to come into a situation where they may be the seventh guy off the bench or something, or they are not playing a starting role, or they are not getting those sort of minutes," stated Brooks Holton. "Just reading the quotes he gave after making the decision, he is talking about how he can see himself being able to grow at the four and the five, and being able to learn from Flory. And I think that is huge and I think that speaks volumes how Pat is selling the program and what his pitch is to these guys and to help get them to the next level. So, I think it gives Louisville a lot of opportunities to be flexible in their lineups.”
OBINNA EKEZIE COMPETING, LEARNING WITH BIDUNGA | The Courier Journal’s Brooks Holton joined Rabaut & Co. @RadioLouie @YaboyZC and discussed the unusual willingness to compete and learn for 5 Star Prospect Obinna Ekezie Jr. with Louisville big man Flory Bidunga.

As stated in this interview, it is extremely rare to see 5-star players willing to come off the bench in this day and age. The majority of these high schoolers want to be one-and-dones and the main guy, but Kelsey appears to have a pitch that Bidunga is going to take Ekezie under his wing, and the 5-star is okay with that.
And with Ekezie okay with that, it allows Louisville to be flexible with their lineups, as Kelsey can now run Ekezie at the four and Bidunga at the five, or vice versa, making this lineup an elite defensive unit that should terrify the ACC and the rest of college basketball.
Ekezie and Bidunga are going to be a one-two punch that the ACC is going to have nightmares about. Both are crazy athletic and are able to not just dominate at the rim on defense, but can be big-time lob threats. Last year, Bidunga earned 13 double-doubles and secured the fourth most blocks in Division I basketball, while Ekezie averaged over 17 points per game and 1.8 blocks per game in his final high school season.
If this works the way Kelsey is drawing it up, then Louisville is going to be a nightmare this season, and Kelsey might take Louisville to that next level with recruiting and be a nightmare moving forward. This program is proving it can land big-time players, and programs nationwide are taking notice; now they just have to cut some nets down.
