For the most part, after missing out on Taylen Kinney and falling out of the race for Tyran Stokes, Pat Kelsey punted on recruiting the 2026 high school class. Instead, he went all-in on the Transfer Portal, and though that yielded a stellar class of veteran transfers, that doesn’t appear to be a permanent strategy for the third-year head coach of the Cardinals.Â
With renewed financial support that led to a dominant portal window, Kelsey has thrust Louisville back into the mix on the recruiting trail, landing a crystal ball prediction for five-star reclass candidate Obinna Ekezie Jr., visiting five-star point guard Reese Alston, and extending an offer to five-star wing Demarcus Henry on Wednesday.Â
A product of Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona, Henry is the son of former NFL wide receiver Chris Henry and brother of five-star Ohio State wide receiver Chris Henry Jr. The 6-foot-7 wing is the 15th overall player in the 2027 class according to 247Sports.Â
Louisville extends offer to 2027 SF Demarcus Henry
Louisville assistant coach Ronnie Hamilton is serving as Henry’s lead recruiter. He’ll have a difficult task with plenty of major programs with deep war chests of resources already in the mix for Henry. Still, that has never scared off Kelsey before, and there’s no reason for it to after outbidding much of the country for Flory Bidunga and Jackson Shelstad in the portal.Â
Louisville already has two commits in the 2027 class, which constitute the No. 1 class in the country. Four-star forward Ferlandes Wright is the 91st-ranked player in the country, and three-star guard Isaac Ellis ranks 191st by 247Sports Composite.Â
Henry, though, is a different caliber of recruit, an elite athlete with pro bloodlines, which is always enticing from a developmental standpoint. As a highly-rated five-star, Henry would be a one-and-done candidate, though hardly a guarantee to make the jump to the NBA after one college season.Â
Kelsey has done a nice job balancing his high school pursuits and proven portal additions. It’s not surprising that he’s working hard to stay on the radar of multiple 2027 five-stars after doing the same with Kinney and Stokes this time last year. However, he still needs to close the deal, as he did with Mikel Brown Jr.
