Earlier this offseason, Louisville basketball and Pat Kelsey made history with Obinna Ekezie Jr.'s commitment to the Cardinals. He became the highest-rated commitment in program history before he ultimately decided to reclass to the 2026 class, where he will now be part of the Cardinals' Final Four push.
Louisville basketball and Pat Kelsey making major push for elite 4-star SF
Before Ekezie’s decision, Louisville fans were getting nervous, as one Big 10 program began making a strong push for the 5-star. Maryland was the program Ekezie’s father went to, and many thought the Terrapins were giving Louisville a legitimate run for the elite center.
However, the Cardinals were able to secure his commitment, and now Louisville has a 7-foot 5-star who might come off the bench, giving this team much-needed depth in its frontcourt.
Obinna Ekezie Jr. and Flory Bidunga are going to be a nightmare duo
Louisville needed some depth this past season, especially in its frontcourt, and Kelsey certainly got that with Ekezie. The 5-star center can space out the floor, shoot some mid-range and from beyond the arc, but is an athletic 7-footer who can emerge as a dominant lob threat.
As for the defensive end, the Cardinals will have a nightmare punch with Ekezie behind Flory Bidunga. Once Bidunga comes off the floor, there will be no sigh of relief from the opponents as Louisville will then have Ekezie come right on, who averaged 1.8 blocks per game this past season.
Louisville fans made it clear they wanted Kelsey to attack the frontcourt, and Kelsey listened and answered the calls. The Cardinals frontcourt has a chance to be something special, and Ekezie made it clear he wants to learn the power forward position as well and try to play along with Bidunga.
Louisville’s roster is built very similarly to how other National Champions built their roster, and a lot has to do with the duo of Bidunga and Ekezie. The Cards now have two dominant centers who should lead this Cardinals defense. Bidunga was a top defender in college basketball last season, and now Kelsey will have the No. 1 center from the 2026 class, who has the potential to be a massive rim protector like he was in high school.
Ekezie is an efficient scorer on offense, averaging 17.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this past season, while on defense, he averaged 1.8 blocks per game. Louisville lacked frontcourt depth and threats from their bigs last season, and Kelsey Wuickluy solved that major issue by landing two 5-stars in Bidunga and Ekezie.
