2024 Week 5 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
By Ryan Stano
The Louisville football team is looking good after another win. They took down Georgia Tech in their first ACC game of the season. The Cardinals won the game 31-19 and got another touchdown from their defense. It was the game that showed they are true contenders to make the College Football Playoff.
Louisville is the ACC's best hope of getting a second bid in the league. It looks like they and Miami are the only two teams that look good enough to make the CFP as an at-large team. One of them is likely to win the conference and get the automatic bid.
There were a lot other things that happened in college football to give Louisville a realistic shot at making the 12-team field. While they are going to be in the prediction table this week, next week will really tell us if they are true contenders because they take on Notre Dame.
Seed | Teams | Reason they are here | Previous Rank |
---|---|---|---|
1. | Texas | SEC Champion | 1 |
2. | Ohio State | Big Ten Champion | 2 |
3. | Utah | Big 12 Champion | 6 |
4. | Miami | ACC Champion | 4 |
5. | Georgia | At-Large | 5 |
6. | Tennessee | At-Large | N/A |
7. | Ole Miss | At-Large | 7 |
8. | Oregon | At-Large | 9 |
9. | Alabama | At-Large | 11 |
10. | Penn State | At-Large | 10 |
11. | Louisville | At-Large | 11 |
12. | Liberty | At-Large | N/A |
Tennessee is the team that makes the biggest jump this week. After beating Oklahoma in Norman in the Sooners' first SEC game ever, the Vols make a giant leap. I'm still dubious about their ability to continue to be contenders, but I have to go on what I see on a week-to-week basis.
Liberty leaps back into the Group of 6 bid party after NIU lost to Buffalo. I picked them to get that spot before the season, and I'm sticking with it now. The Big 12 also became just a one-bid league after Oklahoma State lost to the Utes. Utah is the only team that I can trust from that conference.
The Louisville Cardinals make their CFP debut with that win over Georgia Tech. If they beat Notre Dame this weekend, they'll likely move up. If they lose, they'll fall out. Georgia and Alabama face each other, so the loser of that game will have no room for error the rest of the year.
