The Louisville football team has had some really great ball-carriers over the years. Lamar Jackson leaps out as an elite weapon on the ground. Jawhar Johnson ran for over 1,100 yards just last season. Simply put, the Cardinals know how to run the football.

They have another very capable back on the roster this season. They landed transfer back Donald Chaney from Miami in the offseason. Chaney ran for 478 yards and two touchdowns last year in a reserve role for the Hurricanes. He is the likely starter this season.

Chaney should help a Lousiville Cardinals team that lost its starting quarterback from a year ago. They are going to need a solid running game to help move the offense with regularity. He has been named to a distinguished award preseason watchlist.

Louisville football running back named to Doak Walker watchlist

Chaney has been named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watchlist. The Doak Walker Award is given to the best running back in the country every year. Chaney is one of several backs who are on the preseason watchlist. The Cardinal is hoping to win the award though.

That will be hard to do now that the Cardinals have lost a starter on the offensive line for the season. Still, Louisville is going to use the ground game as the basis for their offense this season. They had two backs who ran for over 800 yards last season so you know they are committed.

Jeff Brohm is going to need to have Chaney play extremely well if the Cardinals are going to make a repeat appearance in the ACC Championship Game. Chaney is going to be a large part of the offense and should be used in the passing game as well. He's a solid receiver out of the backfield.

Hopefully, Chaney can live up to this watchlist hype.
