Louisville basketball is making a push for the 2027 recruiting class this offseason, as Pat Kelsey is looking to try to earn his third 5-star out of high school. The Cardinals are making a strong push for multiple key recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, including 5-star point guard Reese Alston and the No. 1 overall recruit, CJ Rosser.
Louisville fans have seen Kelsey attend multiple games of Alston’s this summer, while the Cardinals earned an early non-official visit this past season in February from Rosser. Other notable recruits Louisville is pursuing include Darius Wabbington and Demarcus Henry. The Cards have made it to each respective finalist list and are now trying to secure their second commitment in the 2027 recruiting class.
Another name Louisville fans had an eye on early on was the 4-star shooting guard Chase Lumpkin. However, it appears that since the Peach Jam event, Louisville has fallen behind two major programs in the pursuit of this highly recruited prospect.
Alabama and Michigan emerge as new favorites for 4-star Chase Lumpkin
Earlier this summer, it was reported that Louisville was one of the top teams in the conversation for the 4-star shooting guard. On3 Sports reported that the Cards were in a recruiting battle with Kentucky, Florida State, Oregon, UCLA, and Georgia, but now it appears there are two clear frontrunners in this race.
Alabama and Michigan are now leading the race for the top 25 overall prospect, according to On3 Sports Jamie Shaw. He reports that Lumpkin canceled a visit to USC, and as of right now, Alabama is the slight favorite in his eyes, with Michigan just slightly behind the Tide.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard is one of the top-rated point guards in the 2027 recruiting class. Lumpkin is ranked as high as No. 25 overall and No. 8 among point guards, but with Louisville’s recent push for Alston and 5-star point guard Cayden Daughtry, it appears Louisville may be falling behind in this race.
The 4-star recruit has earned over 30 offers during his recruiting process, including from notable programs not in the mix, such as Arizona State, Auburn, Tennessee, SMU, Indiana, Florida State, Ole Miss, and others. Lumpkin is coming off an eye-popping season where he averaged 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game.
