The Louisville Cardinals and coach Pat Kelsey overcame major hurdles, winning their first game of the 2026 NCAA tournament 83-79 against the South Florida Bulls. For Louisville basketball, this was the first NCAA tournament program win since 2017, a drought many have endured year after year. Additionally, this was Pat Kelsey’s first NCAA tournament win as a Division 1 coach. It was a major milestone of progress for both parties and a reason for celebration for all of Card Nation.
Ryan Conwell's postgame Pat Kelsey comments show why he's bound to win big at Louisville
The game featured a couple of major scoring performances from Isaac McKneely (23 points) and Ryan Conwell (18 points). J’Vonne Hadley and Sananda Fru also added to the offensive party with 10 points each, respectively, to assist in pushing Louisville to victory. These scoring efforts were obviously major reasons why Louisville was able to hold on to the victory and move on to the second round of the tournament. However, one player who didn’t make major contributions in the scoring category still made his own contributions in the game.
This unlikely x-factor was a major reason for Louisville’s massive first round victory against South Florida.
Kobe Rodgers, who had struggled at times during the season with finding his role on the team, made his mark loud and clear in today’s game. Rodgers was the glue guy, doing just about everything he could without the scoring to help this team. He came up big time and time again on the defensive end, getting important rebounds and steals that greatly shifted the tides for Louisville in key moments.
Rodgers finished the game with 4 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in 20 minutes of playing time. After the game, coach Pat Kelsey highlighted Rodgers and gave him the kudos he so rightfully deserved.
“But we talked about an x-factor, and it might not pop up on the stat sheet, but just that defensive dynamo that went in there," Kelsey stated on Rodgers yesterday. "35 is the best offensive rebounder in the country, and there was a play where Kobe went above the trees and got a huge offensive rebound in a big moment. So to me, the story is about Kobe Rodgers, not anybody else that didn’t play.”
Having key bench players such as Kobe Rodgers playing with poise and confidence does nothing but help as Louisville looks ahead to its next opponent, Michigan State. The length of the road the Cardinals will travel this tournament season is unclear. However, having this team gel at the right moment should give Cards fans hope moving forward that this team has a chance to create something magical this March.
