We have officially entered into the long summer months. A time to take a breath and reflect on the seasons prior, but more importantly, to anticipate and predict the many aspects of how next season will go for your beloved teams. Louisville basketball has been a massive winner this offseason, with Pat Kelsey and staff assembling what will be one of the most talented and strongest rosters in the country.

No longer will Louisville fans have to watch the frontcourt get bullied game in and game out by superior competition with size, length, and strength. Louisville is set up to now be the aggressor at each position, setting the tone and putting a major emphasis on both ends of the floor. Some proven stars that have been brought in are expected to prosper and lead Louisville to a successful season. However, there are a few Louisville Cardinals who will be asked to play enhanced roles for this team, providing the perfect opportunities for them to have breakout, impactful seasons.

Here are 3 Louisville Cardinals who are most likely to have breakout seasons for the Louisville Cardinals next season.

3. Obinna Ekezie Jr., F/C

The incoming re-classified freshman will most likely start the season behind the likes of Flory Bidunga and Alvaro Fulgeras, but the 5-star Ekezie has the makings of becoming one of Louisville’s best players by season’s end. His size and length make him an absolute weapon on both sides of the floor. His ability to create and hit shots allows him to stand out among his counterparts, especially if he is able to find a rhythm from deep as the season progresses.

The dynamic duo of Ekezie and Bidunga has the potential to be one of the most lethal in college basketball. Their games complement each other very well, with Ekezie’s offensive strengths assisting with Bidunga’s shortcomings and vice versa. Ekezie is a natural “5”, but if he is able to slip into the “4” position and provide positive, meaningful minutes for Kelsey, his ceiling skyrockets on what he can become for the Cardinals.

2. Karter Knox, F

Karter Knox’s first two college basketball seasons at Arkansas under John Calipari saw his role on the team become more of a reserve, supplementing the stars with key minutes. This is all about to change as Knox will be handed the keys to the “3” position for the Louisville Cardinals next season. This is Knox’s opportunity to show that he can be an impact player on both ends of the floor for long stretches of minutes if needed.

Knox’s perceived strength is on the defensive end, with his ability to be a lockdown defender shown game in and game out. His offensive abilities appear to have been overshadowed by this fact. Yes, Knox is an average 8 PPG scorer for this career, but he shot the ball (particularly the 3-ball) at a strong 38% from behind the arc last season. Within Pat Kelsey’s offense, and with his total minutes appearing to be increased this season, Knox will have the opportunity to take his game to the next level. Pat Kelsey and Card Nation are banking on it.

1. Adrian Wooley, G

The retention of Adrian Wooley, who is primed to step into the starting “2” guard position next season, was widely celebrated by Card Nation as a major win early in the transfer portal season for Pat Kelsey and company. Wooley showed glimpses of the potential that he can reach through his play last season. He stepped up and became the leading scorer in multiple games when he needed to be, and took big shots when his number was called (the Miami game-winner still gives chills to this day). Wooley has the makings and the ability to not only be an effective guard in this system, but to take a massive step forward and potentially be one of the best players on this team next season.

One perceived issue with this roster is the lack of an apparent scorer or bucket-getter, based on past performances and results among the team’s players. Wooley can easily become that person for Pat Kelsey. He showed he has it in him from his time at Kennesaw St. prior to joining Louisville. Wooley now has to take that step forward and show everyone that he can also make a major impact in the Power 4 rankings each game. If Louisville wants to be a national championship contender next season, Adrian Wooley will have to be one of the major reasons why.
