The Louisville basketball team is shaping up to be a national championship contender to enter the 2026-2027 season. Pat Kelsey and his coaching staff have assembled one of the top rosters in the country with the potential for more names to be added in the future. New staff addition John Andrzejek has made his presence felt early, recruiting arguably the best frontcourt Louisville has seen in many years. Yes, the Cardinals will be a force to be reckoned with when the season starts later this fall.

It’s no secret that Louisville and its donors have set Pat Kelsey up with one of the most lucrative “war chests” in all of college basketball, making it abundantly clear that this year will show whether Kelsey can be the long-term solution to Louisville’s competitive drought. Although the exact total is not known, it is enough to expect Louisville to make a run to the second weekend of the tournament and beyond. Although each player on the team will play a special part in Louisville’s success, some commitments tend to stand out above the rest.

Here are 3 Louisville basketball players for next season that are worth every NIL penny.

3. Obinna Ekezie Jr., F/C

One of the later additions to the team, reclassified freshman Obinna Ekezie Jr. was a major and welcome surprise to Cardinals fans as added talent to an already strong frontcourt. The 5-star center committed to Louisville over the likes of Arkansas and Maryland (the school his father attended) to play for what has become a preseason national title contender. The 7-fo center will learn from transfer Flory Bidunga at the center position, while also potentially adding some time at the “4” position as well.

This commitment is significant not only due to the talent and skill that he brings to the table. His addition also shows that Louisville (and the coaching staff) is a desirable place for the highest quality of high school talent. Beating out the likes of one-and-done master recruiter John Calipari for a player that would have fit into his system perfectly sends a major message to the rest of the college basketball world. Louisville is back to being one of the desirable locations to be for high performing players.

2. Flory Bidunga, C

The exact price tag for former Kansas center Flory Bidunga is unknown, however, this major commitment from the No. 1 player in the transfer portal from many sources started what has been an exceptional and eye-opening offseason for Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals. This commitment gave Louisville the first major piece of the puzzle for addressing last year’s shortcomings, namely length and defensive intensity in the paint. Paired with a commitment from Jackson Shelstad from Oregon, Louisville was off and running with the early No. 1 transfer portal class.

Bidunga’s vast respect on the defensive end will be a major piece to Louisville’s success next season. In year 3 of his contract, Pat Kelsey has made a deliberate statement with the star pieces he has gone after (and received commitments from) so far this offseason. He is following the same blueprint of recent national championships by adding size, strength, and strong guard play. Bidunga will be the focal point of this blueprint and will be a massive star down low for the Cardinals next season.

1. Adrian Wooley, G

The new adage emerging in the transfer portal is that sometimes the best “gets” are the ones you already have. Much speculation surrounded the decision of whether Adrian Wooley would stay at Louisville or leave for another opportunity. Those speculations were put to bed rather quickly when it was made official that Wooley would be returning to Louisville for his junior year. One of last year’s consistent contributors, Wooley, will be the perfect glue piece for Pat Kelsey, a model of the culture and expectations for the incoming players.

Louisville’s ceiling will be directly affected by the play and contributions of Wooley. Wooley has the potential to be a leading scorer if needed, as seen in multiple performances that showed just that last season. The perceived weakness of this team has been the shooting guard position. However, if Wooley can tap into that potential that made him a top-10 transfer target prior to last season, he can be the exact standout performer that Pat Kelsey needs to elevate this team to solid national championship contender consideration.
