Louisville football had an eye-popping offseason as Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals secured a top-five Transfer Portal class in college football. The Cardinals quickly turned heads this offseason, bringing in former 4-star Ohio State commit Lincoln Kienholz and giving him elite weapons on the outside in Tre Richardson and Lawayne McCoy.
The star of the group is, of course, this running back room. Louisville returned Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown, who each averaged over 7.3 yards per carry this past season, and now this Cards squad is making some serious offseason buzz.
Despite Louisville being disrespected in the preseason Coaches Poll, many think this squad has a legitimate path to the College Football Playoff. ESPN college football insider and announcer Greg McElroy just sent a loud message about the 'Cardinals' chances of making the playoffs, and Louisville fans will love it.
Louisville football is a 'legitimate' CFP contender
McElroy is one of the more well-known college football reporters, and it appears the ESPN analyst is all-in on the Cardinals this year. While he doesn’t state that Louisville will make the playoffs, he does break down the Cardinals' schedule and why it is a great path for Louisville to make the playoffs.
“Louisville has a really nice schedule,” stated McElroy. “They do not play Miami, they do not play Clemson, they do not play Virginia. They face exactly one of the league's top six teams all year. That one likely loss is the opener, Ole Miss. Its toughest toss-ups are the road trips to Georgia Tech and Kentucky, with SMU and Pitt coming to Louisville. That is why they sit third in the league with their title.”
The Cardinals' schedule is very favorable this year, and McElroy just proved that. Louisville is playing five of the bottom seven teams from the past ACC standings in Syracuse, North Carolina, Florida State, Wake Forest, and Stanford, and, when looking more closely, these five teams had a combined 12-28 conference record and were outscored by 298 points.
Louisville has tough games with Ole Miss and SMU, but McElroy believes Louisville has a strong chance to not only face Miami in the ACC Championship game, but also a real chance at making history.
“So, Louisville is a legitimate playoff contender hiding in plain sight with the schedule that just handed them a real nice runway to a possible championship game berth,” stated McElroy.
This is exactly what Louisville fans want to hear, and what they have been screaming all offseason. The schedule and the talent are there; now Brohm has to put together a full season and lead Louisville to its first CFP berth.
