Louisville basketball got some concerning news this morning regarding one of the Cardinals' top targets in the 2027 recruiting class. Pat Kelsey has been making a lot of noise with multiple 5-star targets in the 2027 cycle, and the Cardinals have made multiple recruits' recruiting lists.
The recruit Louisville fans have their eyes on is the 5-star point guard, Reese Alston. The Cardinals have been in contact with the star guard for quite some time, but this morning, On3 Sports' Jamie Shaw gave an update on his recruiting process, and it appears Louisville has a real threat from the SEC.
LSU emerging as a major threat to Louisville for 5-star PG
Alston recently cut his recruiting list to just seven schools after earning over 36 offers from major programs like Purdue, Florida State, Illinois, Kansas, Texas, and USC, none of which made the cut. Louisville is one of the seven, and they now face some elite college basketball teams for Alston, including Houston, Wichita State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and LSU.
Louisville landed multiple way-too-early predictions from Shaw with Alston, but the most recent prediction has the Cardinals' eyes. Shaw previously predicted Louisville to land Alston with a “Medium” confidence level; however, that has now been bumped down.
The good news is Shaw still sees Louisville as the favorite, but following Alston’s recent official visit to LSU, he now has a “Low” confidence level in his prediction.
"Coming off that visit, I am told LSU made a strong push in the recruitment. I am also told the plan is for Alston to take all of his visits," stated Shaw. "Alston has Kentucky scheduled for Sept. 13. Speaking with sources, this recruitment remains relatively open at this point."
Over the summer, the Cardinals and the Tigers were two of the top teams in the mix. Shaw reported multiple times this summer that LSU, Wichita State, and Louisville were all making major pushes, with Kentucky and Tennessee making strong pushes in August.
The Cardinals have already hosted Alston for an official visit, but with the 5-star planning to visit the other finalists before his decision, another visit would be monumental for the Cardinals and Kelsey in this recruiting battle.
Alston ranks as high as No. 7 overall in the 2027 recruiting class, and No. 2 among point guards. The 5-star guard averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game last season and was one of the top high school recruits this summer.
Kelsey made multiple visits to watch Alston in person and to build that relationship, but now Shaw makes it clear that LSU and others are gaining some ground in this major recruiting process.
