Louisville basketball and Pat Kelsey are having quite a busy offseason. First, Kelsey and the Cardinals had to completely rebuild their roster for this upcoming season, forcing Louisville to land multiple transfers from the Transfer Portal.
The Cardinals landed the No. 1 Transfer Portal class after earning a commitment from the top-ranked transfer, Flory Bidunga, and multiple 4-star transfers like former 5-star recruit Jackson Shelstad. He then carried that momentum into high school recruiting, landing 5-star center and former 2027 No. 1 overall recruit Obinna Ekezie Jr.
Ekezie would reclass to the 2026 class, but now Kelsey has taken that hot recruiting stretch into the summer, and he is hoping to land more 2027 recruits. Kelsey has been traveling all over this month for high school recruiting, and Louisville fans are beginning to dream big about a pair of guards.
Louisville basketball fans have their eyes on these two elite 5-star PG's
Since Kelsey arrived at Louisville, the Cardinals have really amped up the recruiting at the guard position, more specifically the point guard position. The Cardinals landed 5-star point guard Mikel Brown Jr. in the 2025 recruiting class, and now that recruits have seen how Kelsey gave him the keys and helped Brown get drafted No. 6 overall, more and more recruits are showing interest in Louisville.
Two point guards Kelsey and Louisville are making a push for are two of the top point guards in the class, 5-star Reese Alston and another 5-star Cayden Daughtry.
Daughtry recently broke the internet with his eye-popping Peach Jam MVP performances, averaging  32 points, six assists, and four rebounds while shooting 58.7 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from beyond the arc. Louisville extended an offer to Daughtry, and the Cardinals are a team making a strong push for the 5-star point guard, but will be in a heated recruiting battle with multiple other powerhouse programs.
However, Daughtry isn’t the only point guard Kelsey has his eyes on. Louisville’s head coach was at multiple games of Alston’s this month, showing strong interest in the elite 5-star point guard, making it seem like the Cardinals are heavily recruiting both point guards.
Brown went on to average over 18 points per game and was selected No. 6 overall is going to be a massive recruiting pitch for Kelsey and Louisville, and it should be a big advantage for the Cardinals. These two elite guards want to play for a good team that can compete, but also for a coach and program that can help them get to the NBA.
Kelsey just proved Louisville and himself can do that, and hopefully the Cardinals can find a way to get their next superstar point guard. Of the two, Alston currently ranks slightly higher, as he ranks No. 6 overall and No. 2 among point guards, while Daughtry ranks right behind him at No. 9 overall in the 2027 cycle and No. 3 among point guards.
Kelsey wants Louisville to be ‘PGU,’ and the Cardinals head coach is showing a lot of interest in these two elite point guards this summer. Each guard is going to have a fierce recruiting battle, but if Kelsey landed Brown and Ekezie, maybe he has some magic to land either Alston or Daughtry.
