Louisville basketball just added another massive test to its non-conference schedule as the Cardinals are facing the reigning National Champions, the Michigan Wolverines. The Cardinals and the Wolverines are set to go head-to-head at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit as part of a two-year neutral-site series.
The Cardinals had an eye-popping offseason, adding nine players, including two 5-stars and multiple 4-stars. And now, Kelsey is building one of the toughest non-conference schedules in America. Louisville has Texas, Michigan, Kentucky, Texas Tech, and Baylor all on its schedule already, and with the Cardinals playing in the Players Era Festival, Louisville has a chance to play Oregon or St. John’s in the second round, and Tennessee, Iowa State, Maryland, or San Diego State in the third round.
With a non-conference schedule like this, it is clear Louisville has a gauntlet of a schedule, and it is also clear the Cardinals must be better in one crucial area next season.
Louisville must be better against ranked opponents next season
Last season, Louisville was consistently a top-25 team in the nation. The Cardinals had a really hard time competing against teams in the top 25 last season, especially the top 15. The Cardinals' fans got quite frustrated with Louisville’s performances in top-25 matchups, as not only would Louisville lose, but in some cases they would get blown out. Â
Louisville finished the 2025-26 season going 3-7 against teams ranked in the top 25, 1-6 against teams ranked in the final top 25, and 0-4 against teams ranked in the top 15. Also, in the six losses, the Cardinals lost by an average of 14.8 points. Louisville lost by 31 and 11 to Duke and by 21 to Tennessee. When looking more closely at the other games, the Cardinals went down big, trailing Arkansas by 20, Virginia by 15, and Michigan State by 13.
Now, the Cardinals' 2025-26 non-conference schedule might be even harder this upcoming season as they are set to face two teams likely in the preseason top 10 in Michigan and Texas, and Kentucky, which is likely a preseason top 20 team. Louisville must find a way to compete in these massive showdowns and to avoid similar outcomes like last year, where not only would they lose, but they would go down big and lose by double digits consistently in these rank-vs-rank matchups.
The Cardinals are trending as a potential top-10 team in preseason rankings. Still, they are likely going to be ranked between No. 10 and No. 15. The Cardinals built one of the nation’s most expensive college basketball rosters, so Louisville has Final Four dreams. So these games should be exciting and thrilling, but they must fix one of their biggest weaknesses from the previous season.
