Louisville basketball fans saw the Cardinals land a huge commitment earlier this month when North Carolina transfer Seth Trimble committed to the Cardinals under the“five-for-five” rule. Trimble is one of seven commitments from the Transfer Portal for the Cardinals and is expected to be a key player and starter for Pat Kelsey this upcoming season.

Another transfer following the “five-for-five” rule that Louisville and its fans had a close eye on was Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler. Jon Rothstein reported that Louisville was in the mix for the power forward, saying, “Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler tells me that he’s considering the following schools and will have other conversations later today,” and mentioned Louisville, BYU, Kansas, and Kentucky.

Well, yesterday, it was reported that Kohler officially committed to the BYU Cougars. And while Cardinals fans knew it was a dream and a long shot to land Kohler, it was still a win, as they got to celebrate another Mark Pope whiff.

Jaxon Kohler commits to BYU over Kentucky, Louisville and Kansas

Kohler was one of the top transfers in the Transfer Portal following the “five-for-five” rule, as the 6-foot-8, 250-pound power forward is a physical rebounder who can also space the floor and shoot from beyond the arc.

The race for the Michigan State transfer was between the four schools Rothstein reported, but many saw this as a two-team race between BYU and Kentucky. Now, Kohler made it official and committed to BYU over Kentucky, making this a small victory for the Cardinals as they get to enjoy another Kentucky whiff.

The Cardinals have the No. 1 overall Transfer Portal class in the nation. They added seven transfers, including two who rank inside the top 20, a 5-star, and the No. 1 overall transfer, Flory Bidunga, and a 4-star and the No. 18 overall transfer, Jackson Shelstad.

Kohler was a dream target for the Cardinals, as he averaged 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc after making 58 3s on the season, but after signing Trimble, On3 Sports Joe Tipton reported Louisville was “likely not pursuing”. Louisville already has one of the most expensive rosters in the nation, so adding Kohler was certainly a long shot.

So, while Louisville didn’t land the elite power forward, the Cardinals fans will enjoy Kentucky missing out on the Michigan State transfer.
