Louisville football just got another major update for its defense as the Cardinals will have another key player from this past season return to UofL after the “five-for-five” rule. The Cardinals and fans learned not too long ago that defensive back Jabari Mack and linebacker Kalib Perry announced their return to the Cardinals; now another key defensive back will join this list.

One of the Cardinals' top defenders from the 2025 season, D’Angelo Hutchinson, announced on Instagram on Tuesday that he will return to Louisville, giving this secondary a massive boost.

For those who don’t know, a Colorado judge granted seniors from the class of 2022 another year of eligibility earlier this summer, giving many players who thought their collegiate careers were over another year to play in college sports.

Louisville basketball and football have capitalized on this new ruling: Pat Kelsey landed North Carolina star Seth Trimble, and now Brohm has brought back three key veterans from the 2025 season who will be valuable contributors on this defense. The Cardinals brought back some key players up front and in their linebacker room before the “five-for-five” rule, but they were forced to rebuild their secondary.

Now, the Cardinals' secondary will be led by three key returners from this past season, in Mack, Tayon Halloway, and now Hutchinson. Hutchinson was second on the Cardinals in total tackles this past season with an impressive 84 tackles, including 39 solo tackles. Hutchinson and Halloway led the Cardinals in pass breakups with five, and Hutchinson added 2.5 tackles for loss and an interception.

The Cardinals' defense has a lot of experience now, and it's very similar to last year's. While the Cardinals offense should be exciting and explosive, many believe this defense could be the strength, and bringing back Hutchinson gives Louisville’s secondary even more depth and someone who knows the system and how to succeed.

The Cardinals enter the season ranked for the first time since 2017, at No. 24 in the AP Poll. With Hutchinson back in the Cardinals' defense, this Louisville defense is going to shock a lot of college football fans. Louisville has its eyes on the program's first ACC Title and first CFP berth, but bringing back Hutchinson, Perry, and Mack should make the Cardinals fans feel even more excited about this upcoming season.
