Louisville football gets huge defensive update with two key players returning

Earlier this month, Louisville basketball fans saw the Cardinals land a player following the “five-for-five” rule, as Pat Kelsey brought in Seth Trimble from North Carolina. Now it is Jeff Brohm’s turn, as Louisville football got a major update on the defensive side of the ball. The Cardinals learned yesterday they'll bring back two key players from this past season.

On3 Sports' Pete Nakos reports Louisville will bring back linebacker Kalib Perry and defensive back Jabari Mack, adding some depth to the Cardinals' secondary.

The Cardinals' linebacker room is now going to be one of its biggest strengths on defense, as Louisville has four solid options in Antonio Watts, TJ Capers, Stanquan Clark, and now Perry. As for Louisville’s secondary, the Cardinals added some key pieces in Tennessee transfer Kaleb Beasley, Ole Miss transfer TJ Banks, Kentucky transfer DJ Waller, and Iowa transfer Koen Entringer, but bringing back Mack to join Tayon Holloway in the secondary is huge for this defense.

Brohm made it clear he had his eyes on a few players after the Colorado judge granted a preliminary injunction to outgoing seniors from the class of 2022, allowing them another year and a fifth year of eligibility.

"Yes, we have some targets there," stated Brohm. "For us, we're making sure that this ruling and the declaration of how this is going to work become fully clear. We're in position to do what we need to do, as long as everything gets approved by our conference, our administration. We want to make sure that we're on the up and up and we're doing things right, but there are a couple of young men that would fit that category for us that we've been in contact with”

Now, the Cardinals just secured two key additions for their defense, and with Louisville eyeing an ACC Title and a College Football Playoff run, they are going to give this defense a major boost.

Perry transferred to Louisville last offseason after playing the first three seasons with Tennessee. Last year, he finished with the team's fifth-most tackles (55), plus one pass deflection and one interception. As for Mack, he finished with 34 tackles, two pass deflections, and two interceptions. Two games that stand out for the defensive back include the Cardinals' win over James Madison, where he secured an interception, and the Cardinals' win over Miami, when he earned three tackles and an interception.
