Louisville basketball is making a major push in the 2027 recruiting class as the Cardinals aim to land a 5-star recruit for the third straight year. Pat Kelsey has elevated the program’s recruiting, landing two straight 5-stars in Mikel Brown Jr. and Obinna Ekezie Jr.
Louisville basketball continues to gain momentum for 5-star PG Reese Alston
Now, he is looking to build on Brown going one-and-done and being drafted No. 6 overall as he targets some of the nation’s top point guards. Louisville has made it clear through their actions that they want to add 5-star PG Reese Alston, and On3 Sports' Joe Tipton reported that the Cardinals are in a major battle with one SEC program.
Louisville battles LSU for 5-star Reese Alston
Alston cut his list to seven schools after earning over 35 offers, putting the Cardinals in a heated recruiting battle with Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, Wichita State, Houston, and Vanderbilt. Kelsey and Louisville have continued trending in the right direction with the elite 5-star point guard, landing multiple predictions that he'll commit.
As we inch closer to November, Tipton reports Alston is “nearing a college decision,” and reports there are “two clear frontrunners.” Right now, UofL is going up against Will Wade and his LSU Tigers, as both programs continue to make the most noise with Alston.

Kelsey has visited Alston multiple times, including flying out this summer to watch the 5-star point guard play at summer recruiting camps, and then the coach visited Alston in September. The Cardinals also earned an official visit earlier this year and are now trying to edge out the Tigers.
Kelsey is known to recruit the guard position extremely heavily, and Alston would be another historic commitment if he landed the 5-star. Alston ranks as high as No. 9 overall and No. 3 among point guards. The Houston native is an elite scorer who averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, earning MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team honors.
Wade has quickly elevated LSU’s basketball program, as he is trying to pair Alston with 5-star guard King Gibson. The combo guard is a top-10 recruit in the nation and committed to LSU over Louisville, as the Cardinals were in his final four. Now, Kelsey will look to win this recruiting battle over Wade and is trying to earn his first major splash in the 2027 recruiting class.
Jamie Shaw and Aaron Torres both predicted Louisville would land Alston earlier this year, but this report from Tipton makes it clear this one is coming down to the wire. Louisville fans are all-in on Alston, and hopefully Kelsey can land his second 5-star point guard.
