Louisville basketball fans are excited for the upcoming season, as Pat Kelsey has made huge adjustments as the Cardinals' head coach and completely rebuilt this roster. The Cardinals lost nine of their top 10 players from the previous season, including all five starters and their top four leading scorers: Mikel Brown Jr., Ryan Conwell, J’Vonne Hadley, and Isaac McKneely.
Kelsey went to work this offseason, adding nine players, including six from the Transfer Portal and three from the 2026 recruiting class. A lot of the attention goes to Louisville’s top two additions from the Transfer Portal in Flory Bidunga and Jackson Shelstad, as Bidunga was the No. 1 overall transfer in the portal and Shelstad is the No. 18 overall transfer from the portal.
But if Louisville wants to reach its full potential, Fox Sports analyst Aaron Torres revealed Louisville’s biggest X-factor for the upcoming season.
Karter Knox could determine the Cardinals’ Final Four ceiling
Everyone knows Bidunga and Shelstad are going to be the two stars, but Torres revealed the most “intriguing” player on the Cardinals' roster is the 4-star transfer from Arkansas, Karter Knox.
“If Louisville wants to reach its potential, you know what you get from Flory Bidunga. You know what you get from Jackson Shelstad. I think if Karter Knox is a 10, 11, or 12-point-per-game guy, I don’t know if you can reach your potential," stated Torres. "If he is a 17,18 points per game guy, then I think Louisville is a legit Final Four contender, top 10 team, top five team, competing for an ACC regular season title, all that stuff.”
Knox is a former 5-star recruit who was heavily recruited by the Cardinals when he ranked No. 22 in the nation and No. 8 among small forwards. He flipped his commitment from Kentucky to Arkansas, where he played his first two seasons with the Razorbacks.
Now, Torres makes it clear that if Louisville wants to be a true ACC Title contender and Final Four contender, Knox has to take that jump this offseason.
In his first two seasons with Arkansas, the 4-star transfer started in 42 of his 58 games, including 18 games this past season. His freshman season is the one that grabs a lot of people's attention, including Torres', during which he averaged 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 35 percent from downtown.
He then stepped it up in the postseason and was one of Arkansas' best players, scoring 15 in the Round of 32 against St. John’s and 20 against Texas Tech.
Then Knox played in just 22 games this past season, as his season was limited by surgery on his left meniscus in February. In his 22 games, he averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 46 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc.
Now, he is part of this massive Louisville Transfer Portal haul, and he is the third-highest commitment, ranked No. 59 overall and No. 8 among small forwards. Louisville fans are hoping the Cardinals can end their Final Four drought this upcoming season, and Torres makes it clear that Knox is the key X-factor for that to happen.
