Wow. What an offseason for Pat Kelsey. Louisville basketball is coming off an underwhelming 2025-26 season where the Cardinals entered the season with Final Four hopes but were bounced in the second round by Michigan State, and Mikel Brown Jr. missed the final six games. Kelsey was forced to rebuild his roster, and he is exceeding all expectations.
Obinna Ekezie Jr. makes his Louisville commitment better with season-changing news
Louisville just landed its second 5-star this offseason as Obinna Ekezie Jr. announced his commitment this afternoon. The 5-star center committed to Louisville over Kentucky, Maryland, BYU, and Arkansas, and with his commitment, he has made Louisville history immediately after committing to Kelsey.
5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. makes Louisville basketball history with commitment
When Brown committed to Louisville, it was the first 5-star to commit to the Cardinals in quite some time, and he became the second-highest commitment in program history with a composite rating of 0.9962. Well, Brown is now the third-highest commitment in program history, as just a little over a year later, Kelsey lands his second 5-star recruit out of high school, and now Ekezie Jr. becomes the highest-rated Louisville commitment in program history.
Before today, the highest-rated Cardinals commitment was back in 2008 when Samardo Samuels had a composite rating of 0.9985. However, he no longer stands at the top (for now), as Ekezie made history with his commitment, with a composite rating of 0.9986.
The 7-foot, 215-pound center is a unanimous 5-star in the 2027 recruiting class and ranks as high as No. 2 in the 2027 cycle and No. 1 among centers. He had a 7-foot-4 wingspan and was dominant this past season, averaging 17.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.
Now, Ekezie did reclass to the 2026 class, so his rating will likely drop once 247Sports updates his composite rating to the 2026 cycle. But, for now, he ranks as the highest-rated Louisville basketball commit in program history.
