The Transfer Portal madness continues across the college basketball ranks this weekend, as visits and speculation about where the remaining individuals currently in the portal run rampant. Highly touted transfer portal players are zeroing in or committing to their new squads as rosters continue to take shape. The Louisville basketball team is one of these very teams, currently working on finalizing the star power of its roster and looking forward to the depth adds they will need at each position.

The philosophy of this Transfer Portal season for Pat Kelsey has shifted dramatically as the Cardinals try to correct the shortcomings of last year’s roster. The focus now appears to be on defensive strength and toughness, while not placing as high a priority on recruiting the highest-caliber shooters. With the massive return of Adrian Wooley, the latter may not be as much of a concern in terms of adding pieces for Pat Kelsey. However, the frontcourt and the strength and intimidation it will provide remain the focal point of the recruiting effort.

Pat Kelsey and Louisville are eyeing the next potential frontcourt piece

Word spread across social media and recruiting circles that Louisville has contacted a currently available portal player. Yaak Yaak previously played for the Oregon St. Beavers, where he averaged 6.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. His numbers don’t pop off the page, nor should they, as this appears to be a key depth add to the bench to back up Flory Bidunga.

Before his time at Oregon State, the center played at the JUCO level, where he was a dominant rim protector, logging 50 blocks in 27 games. He averaged 10.6 points while shooting 48 percent from the field and 6.2 rebounds per game.

However, Yaak’s size (6-foot-11, 230 lbs) and strength are major components that could make him a major bench addition and contributor not only on the offensive end, but particularly on the defensive end. Kelsey continues to key in on players that have the size and the strength needed to be an intimidating presence in the ACC and across the country. The philosophy appears to have changed from hoping to outshoot the opponent to hoping to outphysical opposing teams on both ends of the floor.

The additions to the team this far into the transfer portal, as well as the coaching additions to the staff, only continue to reiterate this change in philosophy. Time will tell how well this roster is truly constructed. However, one thing is certainly clear, not just to Louisville fans, but to opposing programs across the country. Louisville is motivated and focused on securing the best available players and building the best roster possible for Pat Kelsey’s pivotal Year 3.
