Louisville basketball’s 2026-27 roster is beginning to fill up as the Cardinals have now landed six transfer commitments after landing one on Friday and one on Saturday. The Cards now have their starting five and a few bench pieces as Pat Kelsey rebuilds this roster, but the job isn’t done just yet.
Pat Kelsey and Louisville keep rolling with another recruiting win over Kentucky
Pat Kelsey lost all five starters from this past season and multiple bench players. So, while he is absolutely crushing it this offseason and has Louisville likely ranked in the top 15, maybe the top 10, when the season starts, as of now, he still needs to go get some pieces and attack a few areas.
When looking at the roster, there is one specific area Louisville fans would like him to address, and that is a 3-point specialist.
Louisville basketball must get a 3-point specialist
The Cardinals have had players make 100 3-pointers or more in back-to-back seasons, as this past season, Ryan Conwell splashed 112, Isaac McKneel splashed 96, and in the 2024-25 season, Reyne Smith made 107.
Since Kelsey arrived in Louisville, the Cardinals have emerged as a team that lives and dies by the 3-point shot. The Cardinals shot over 50 percent of their field goals from downtown this past season, and while it appears Kelsey is making some adjustments this offseason and doesn’t want to live and die from the 3-point range, he needs to still address this area.
The Cardinals need someone like Smith or McKneely, a pure shooter from downtown, whom teams must game-plan for. The Cardinals have hit homerun after homerun this offseason, ranking No. 1 in 247 Sports Transfer Portal rankings, but adding a player who is a catch-and-shoot type of player that can shoot around 40 percent from beyond the arc and hit 90-plus 3’s on the year would be crucial for this team.
Louisville has players who have proven they can make 3’s, Adrian Wooley, Jackson Shelstad, and Karter Knox, but adding a player who is pure knockdown from beyond the arc, who can add spacing, or in a game-time decision when you need 3 points, you want him on the floor.
This team is trending to be a top team in the nation and has legit Final Four hopes and dreams for the second straight season. And if Kelsey can go get a sharpshooter from beyond the arc like McKneely and Smith, but one who comes off the bench,, then this team would fill a glaring area of need.
