High school recruiting is moving into the next phase, as multiple 5-stars update their lists and begin official visits to their top programs. Pat Kelsey has elevated Louisville basketball recruiting to the next level, landing a 5-star in two straight recruiting classes and now looking to land his third.
The Cardinals are trending with multiple 5-star recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, including a few of the top guards. A lot of attention is going to 5-star point guard Reese Alston, as Kelsey has made multiple trips to see Alston, and the 5-star has already taken an official visit to Louisville.
However, it appears Kelsey is trying to pair the 5-star guard with another elite guard, as Louisville is pushing to land the No. 3 recruit in the nation, Cayden Daughtry.
Louisville basketball is making some noise with 5-star PG
Earlier this year, Daughtry cut his list down to 14 schools, including the Louisville Cardinals. It wasn’t a huge update to make the 5-stars top 14, but Louisville making the list was one small step in the right direction.
Now, Kelsey, as the 5-star, recently visited a handful of programs; he talked with Joe Tipton and made it clear he wants Daughtry and wants him bad.
“I wasn’t planning on taking a visit there, but Pat Kelsey really just came down to South Florida when I was at one of my practices and put it straightforward: “We need you. We want you.” stated Daughtry, according to Tipton. “After reconsidering and seeing the energy he had, how Coach Jermaine and everybody came down to practice, and how they were, I couldn’t leave them out. So I decided to take a visit there, and I want to see what’s up. I want to see it firsthand.”
Kelsey’s bold message was straight and to the point for the 5-star, and his boldness is why the Cardinals are going to get an official visit. From this quote, it sounds like Louisville was on the outside looking in for Daughtry before Kelsey’s visit and message, so Louisville might have some ground to make up, but it also sounds like Louisville is getting a visit from the top-five recruit soon.
Daughtry is one of the nation's highest-rated recruits after his dominant offseason at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam. The 5-star averaged 32.3 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 90.4 percent from the free-throw line. He also averaged 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.9 steals.
He recently made official visits to Florida State, Iowa, Tennessee, and Florida, and Tipton reports that Louisville, Arkansas, and Miami are also getting official visits this fall.
The 5-star guard ranks as high as No. 3 overall in the nation, and No. 2 among point guards. Daughtry is a player Cardinals fans want to definitley keep an eye on, as he has the potential to follow Mikel Brown’s footsteps and be a future NBA lottery pick.
