Pat Kelsey makes his move after recent 5-star PG Reese Alston recruiting update

Louisville basketball got some concerning updates regarding one of their top targets in the 2027 recruiting class, and Pat Kelsey immediately took matters into his own hands. Five-star point guard Reese Alston is one of the top prospects in the country for the upcoming recruiting class, and the Cardinals have made it clear they are prioritizing him.

Kelsey attended multiple games of his over the summer and has already secured an official visit from him as well. However, the 5-star guard recently took an official visit to LSU and is planning to visit the other five in his final seven.

On3 Sports Jamie Shaw dropped his confidence in the Cardinals' chances to land Alston, and it appears Kelsey immediately took action, as 247Sports Jacob Polacheck reported Kelsey and assistant coach Ronnie Hamilton traveled to see him on Wednesday.

The recruiting battle for Alston is heating up quickly as Kelsey is doing everything he can to not lose his current lead with the 5-star point guard. Right now, Shaw gives Louisville the edge, as he predicted the Cardinals would land the 5-star with a “low” confidence level; however, that used to be a “medium” confidence level, which isn’t the most encouraging update for the Cardinals fans.

Alston visited LSU over the weekend, marking his third official visit, as the star guard had already took official visits to Louisville and Wichita State. The 5-star cut his list down to seven schools, where the Cardinals are battling the Shockers and Tigers, as well as Kentucky, Tennessee, Houston, and Vanderbilt.

Louisville continues to make a major push for Alston, as the Cardinals are trying to land their second 5-star point guard in three years, and their third 5-star in three straight years. Many recruits were impressed with Mikel Brown Jr. in his lone year with the Cardinals, and seeing Kelsey develop him into the No. 6 overall pick is a dream blueprint for high school recruits like Alston.

Alston ranks as high as No. 7 overall and No. 2 among point guards, so he is a game-changing prospect in this 2027 recruiting class. The unanimous 5-star point guard averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, earning MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team.

The Cardinals have plenty of work to do if they want Alston, but Kelsey is showing the 5-star how badly he wants him to be a Cardinal. With LSU and others beginning to make their pitches and land visits with Alston, Kelsey showed he isn’t going to just sit and wait. This race is heating up, and Louisville is right in the middle of it.
