Louisville basketball is eyeing multiple recruits in the 2027 cycle as the recruiting battles heat up. The summer months are usually the major recruiting period in college sports, as they are the best time for coaches to build relationships with recruits and get them on campus for an official visit during the season.
Kelsey has not had a slow offseason these past few months, as Louisville was very active in the Transfer Portal, landing six transfers and the No. 1 Transfer Portal class, and now he has quickly turned his attention to high school recruiting. Louisville is making a strong push for multiple elite prospects in the 2027 recruiting class, but one 5-star has been getting a lot of attention recently.
The Cardinals are known to recruit some elite guards, and trending as one of Kelsey’s top targets in the 2027 recruiting class right now is 5-star guard King Gibson.
Louisville basketball in recruiting battle for elite 5-star guard
Gibson is an elite scorer who continues to turn heads this offseason and prove why he is ranked so high in the 2027 recruiting class. The Cardinals are one of the top teams making a push for the 5-star this offseason, as Joe Tipton reported that Gibson stated that Louisville is one of many teams he has been talking to a lot recently.
Other notable teams making a push for the elite 5-star include Arkansas, Michigan, Baylor, UConn, LSU, and North Carolina State. Right now, Gibson has earned over 32 offers, including from the seven programs making a strong push for him, but also from notable programs not listed, like Alabama, Houston, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, and others.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo guard is one of the top-ranked recruits in the 2027 recruiting class as he ranks as high as No. 5 overall in the 2027 recruiting cycle, No. 1 among combo guards, and No. 1 from North Carolina. Gibson told On3 Sports that Louisville is pushing the story that Mikel Brown Jr. committed to the Cardinals as a top recruit and developed into a top-6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Kelsey claimed Louisville is “PGU,” and with Brown going as one of the first point guards in the 2026 draft, it certainly gives him a major recruiting angle for these elite 5-star guards.
Louisville is making a push for multiple 5-star guards in the 2027 recruiting class, including the No. 7 overall recruit, Reese Alston, and the No. 9 overall recruit, Cayden Daughtry. The Cards already have a commitment from the 2027 recruiting class in Ferlandes Wright, who is ranked No. 59 overall and No. 8 among power forwards.
