Louisville basketball secured their 17th win of the season, as they defeated Boston College Wednesday night. Cardinals secured their 10th ACC victory which is their first 10 win season in ACC play since 2019-2020 season, but it may have costed them their star guard.
Chucky Hepburn exited and went to the locker room but was seen on the bench laughing with teammates with about five minutes remaining. Louisville basketball fans anxiously awaited an injury update, and after the game they received some concerning news.
The Cardinals star guard has had 12 games of seven or more assists and against SMU, Hepburn broke Louisville's single game assists record, as he recorded 16 assists. Hepburn has scored 10 points or more in 16/22 games this season and has had 20 or more in four of those games.
Here is what Coach Pat Kelsey had to say after the game.
Chucky Hepburn injury update
Chucky Hepburn is one of the main reasons for this programs turnaround. The Cardinals were 8-24 last season, 4-28 in 2023 and a combine record of 25-71 in the last three seasons, and now sit now 17-6 and were ranked for first time since 2020.
Hepburn is top 15 in the country in total assists, assist per game, and total steals and steals per game, as he averages 2.4 steals per game. Hepburn is a clear frontrunner to win Defensive player of the year in the ACC and will most likely be on the first-team All ACC.
Chucky Hepburn appeared to injure or tweak something while he made a layup with 15:16 remaining in the second half. He clearly seemed to be uncomfortable as he was shown walking back and forth trying to walk and warm up but never returned. When J’vonne Hadley was asked about Hepburn injury he stated the following.
“He is also a dawg. He will be good." Hadley stated
However, Pat Kelsey had a different update in his press conference after the 84-58 victory.
"I was told by the medical people that he couldn't return" Pat Kelsey later on in the press conference stated.
It could have been to save him and it wasn't worth to get the star guard back on the court, since the Cardinals were up so much, but the fact the doctors informed Kelsey not to let Hepburn play is alarming.
William McDermott reported, that Kelsey had "no update", and "We'll know more tomorrow on where he's at, I have nothing to report as of now."
Chucky Hepburn went 5-10 from the field, and 2-4 from beyond the arc. He finished the game with 12 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, and a steal in his 24 minutes of action.
Louisville will take on Miami on ESPN, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. local time from KFC Yum! Center.
