Jeff Brohm is sticking with the Cardinals, turns down Penn State gig

It doesn't look like Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm is going anywhere anytime soon, after reportedly turning down another job.

Just three years after taking over the Louisville football program, head coach Jeff Brohm has already led the Cardinals to three winning seasons and three postseason appearances.

Now, as teams (or, really, just the Penn State Nittany Lions) look in his direction to fill their coaching vacancies, Brohm has stuck by his team, which also happens to be his alma mater.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, as one coach after another had to be crossed off Penn State's list for future head coaches, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Brohm had told the Louisville football program he was not looking at any other jobs.

With James Franklin out at Penn State and now at Virginia Tech, the Nittany Lions were looking all over the country for possible replacements, including at the Cardinals' leader. One coach after another either signed with another team or agreed to an extension at their current program.

Brohm had yet to sign an extension when he told his bosses that he wasn't looking elsewhere, but CBS Sports' Brandon Marcell reported that the head coach and the football program were in active discussions about his current contract.

In 2022, when he was originally hired as the Cardinals' head coach, he signed a six-year, $36 million contract. When he won 10 games in 2023, his contract was extended to an eight-year, $49.5 million deal.

This season, the Cardinals fell a few games short of a 10-win season, keeping Brohm's secondary contract details intact, but the desire to keep him as the team's head coach might have a little cash flowing in his direction sooner rather than later.

Louisville finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record, and while the Cardinals won't play in the ACC Championship or College Football Playoff, they are primed for yet another appearance in a bowl game.

Just a couple of hours after the Brohm reports started coming out, rumors began cropping up that Penn State was settling for its interim head coach, Terry Smith, to become the Nittany Lions' full-time head coach.
