Louisville football recently learned on Sunday that the Kentucky Wildcats and Will Stein landed the state’s No. 4 overall recruit, Malachi Brown. The Kentucky native was on Louisville’s radar for a long period of time as the Cardinals visited Brown this winter and hosted the 4-star this spring for a practice.

However, Kentucky hosted Brown for an official visit this past weekend, and it was enough to secure the 4-star's commitment. Brown ranks as high as No. 174 in the 2027 recruiting class and No. 21 among defensive linemen. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound 4-star attends Corbin High School, and now that Kentucky has landed the 4-star target, Jeff Brohm and Vince Marrow must move on to their next target.

When thinking about Brohm and who the Cardinals' next No. 1 in-state target is, there is one obvious choice.

Dre’mail Carothers emerges as Louisville's next No. 1 in-state target

When looking at Louisville’s 2027 recruiting class, the Cardinals and Brohm are still looking for that quarterback commitment. Right now, Louisville’s clear No. 1 QB target is the Kentucky native Dre’mail Carothers.

The Cards had a 4-star quarterback commitment, but Jack Sorgi decommitted from Louisville and flipped his commitment to his father’s alma mater, the Wisconsin Badgers. So, Louisville and Brohm are looking for that next QB commitment, and the Cardinals' clear No. 1 target is Carothers.

The 3-star quarterback is coming off a recent visit, as Carothers visited Louisville this past weekend along with 10 other recruits. Carothers was a key visitor this weekend for Louisville, and now that Brown has committed to Kentucky, Louisville has its new No. 1 in-state target.

Carothers attends Owensboro Catholic High School and had a dominant season this past year, throwing for 4,001 yards and 49 touchdowns, along with 114 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. The 3-star Kentucky native completed 67 percent of his 424 passes and led Owensboro Catholic High School to a 13-2 record.

The 3-star quarterback ranks No. 855 in the nation and No. 40 among QB’s. Carothers ranks No. 11 out of the Kentucky natives, and if the Cards can earn his commitment, he would be the sixth in-state commitment. Carothers has earned 14 offers so far, including from UNC and USF, as the 3-star has a visit lined up with USF on June 19 and visited North Carolina on May 29.

Louisville right now ranks No. 25 in the nation for its 2027 recruiting class, and Brohm and Marrow are looking to make program history. Louisville has earned five commitments from Kentucky and five more from Ohio, including three 4-stars from Kentucky. The Cards are trying to secure their third recruiting class to finish in the top 25, and Carothers has a chance to be a key addition.
