Louisville football learned in June that their top-ranked 2027 commitment, Allen Evans, flipped his commitment from the Cardinals to Vanderbilt. The 4-star Louisville native is a top-100 recruit, ranking as high as No. 76 in the 2027 recruiting cycle and No. 10 among cornerbacks.
After news broke that Evans flipped from the Cardinals to the Commodores, Jeff Brohm and Vince Marrow turned their attention to a few other 2027 recruits. One of Louisville’s top targets after the Evans update was elite 4-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., as Louisville was emerging in a heated recruiting battle for the Ohio native.
Torbert announced his decision on Wednesday evening, and Louisville fans assumed it was coming, but the Cardinals learned the 4-star didn’t commit to Brohm or Louisville and instead committed to the Michigan Wolverines over the Cardinals, Ohio State, and Indiana.

Louisville football's late push for elite 4-star Monsanna Torbert Jr. falls short
Torbert is one of the top-ranked cornerbacks in the 2027 recruiting class, and it was reported a couple of weeks ago that Louisville quickly entered the mix for the elite 4-star. The Ohio native originally committed to Indiana earlier this year, but he became highly recruited and earned offers from major programs, which ultimately led him to decommit from Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback received 34 offers, including from Louisville, Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Florida State, and others. Leading up to his commitment announcement, many thought this was a two-team battle, but Louisville joined the mix in late June as Rivals' recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong reported that Louisville quickly entered the mix for the 4-star cornerback.
However, Louisville might have picked up the momentum just a little too late, as Torbert had already set his commitment date for July 1 and had just taken official visits to Ohio State and Michigan. So, when Louisville entered the race, Wiltfong made it seem like it was a three-team battle for the Ohio native, but the Cardinals were likely long shots to land Torbert over Michigan and Ohio State.
Torbert took an official visit to Ohio State on June 12 and followed it with an official visit to Michigan the next weekend on June 19. After that visit to Michigan, the Wolverines emerged as the clear favorite for the 4-star landing predictions from multiple On3 Sports recruiting experts.
Louisville had its eyes on a big prize, but with Marrow’s Ohio roots, they were trying to land their biggest 2027 recruit yet. Torbert is a unanimous 4-star recruit in the 2027 cycle, ranking as high as No. 70 overall in the 2027 recruiting class, No. 9 overall among cornerbacks, and No. 3 among recruits from Ohio.
Louisville football has 16 commitments in the 2027 recruiting class, including multiple 4-stars in AJ Tillman Jr., Chuck Alexander, Ja’Hyde Brown, and D'Angelo White.
