Postseason maneuverings are in full swing for the Louisville Cardinals as they prepare for the official opening of the transfer portal on April 7th. Coaches are off to new positions, as Thomas Carr is heading to Indiana and Brian Kloman to Auburn. Louisville basketball players are also making final decisions about whether to stay with Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals or test the transfer portal.

With key coaching departures of Carr and Kloman creating an opening on the coaching staff, the need to fill the position quickly was apparent to coach Kelsey. This hire had to be an individual who not only had the experience needed to push Louisville to the next level but also helped address some of the shortcomings the Cardinals faced this past season. Kelsey appears to have found his guy for the role in former Campbell head coach (and former Florida assistant coach) John Andrzejek.

Pat Kelsey looks to tackle major flaws head-on with his latest coaching hire

One of the major knocks against Kelsey since he took the role in the spring of 2024 is that he and those on his coaching staff had not proven they could coach at the highest levels of college basketball. Sure, beloved Cardinal Peyton Siva has been on Kelsey’s staff, but he reached college basketball’s highest summit as a player, not a coach. This criticism can no longer be placed at Kelsey’s doorstep with the hire of Andrzejek.

Andrzejek was a key figure in the Florida Gators' 2025 national championship run, serving as the team's “defensive coordinator.” He coached alongside current Florida head coach Todd Golden in the biggest games and ultimately shared in the team's major success. Louisville needs this type of experience on its staff and in its locker room; someone who knows exactly what it takes to be a champion.

Additionally, another major criticism the hire of Andrzejek appears to address is Louisville’s defensive inconsistency. His work speaks for itself, as he turned a team ranked between 90 and 100 in defensive efficiency into a top-10 team in just 1 season. It’s a key point of his resume that should excite Louisville fans as the transfer portal season begins to ramp up.

Looking at the roster that Andrzejek helped to assemble and coached at Florida, one of the main themes is simply the types of players that Andrzejek prefers to coach, individuals with size and length. This has been an issue with Louisville’s roster construction, especially in the frontcourt, which was exposed on multiple occasions last season. The hope would be that Andrzejek could be a key contributor to bringing the proper players with these key physical and intangible features to Louisville.

There is much uncertainty that will surely be addressed in the coming weeks. However, this hire by Kelsey is a major step in the right direction and a sign that he not only understands the shortcomings of last year’s Louisville Cardinals team but is actively working to fix them for a pivotal year three on the horizon.
