After a season leaving many Louisville basketball fans questioning the direction and the future of the team, Pat Kelsey has answered the call in strong fashion to start the offseason. Just approximately one month after the season’s finale, the Louisville Cardinals have assembled one of the top transfer portal rosters from a talent perspective. Throwing in the massive retention of Adrian Wooley from last year’s squad, Pat Kelsey and his coaching staff have the Cardinals appearing to be a top 15 team to start next season.
Louisville basketball's new No. 1 target is clear after major Obinna Ekezie Jr. update
The roster construction has greatly differed from Kelsey’s approach last season. The major shift from speed and sharpshooting to length, strength, and a defensive focus has many excited for Louisville’s chances entering next season. One concern that has spread throughout the Louisville fanbase is the perceived lack of a sharpshooting guard. However, recent history has shown that Kelsey’s approach this offseason not only ensures competitive play against top opponents. It has also produced championship-level results.
Pat Kelsey is mirroring the blueprint of previous championship level teams
One of the major knocks with the roster as it currently sits is the lack of a true sharpshooter, something Louisville relied on in the past 2 seasons through Ryan Conwell and Reyne Smith. Louisville basketball currently does not have a player on the roster who shot over 40% from behind the arc as it stands today. However, looking at 2 of last year’s Final Four teams, the need for a highly effective sharpshooter may not be a dealbreaker when it comes to winning a championship.
Take Michigan, for instance. Michigan had only 1 player shoot over 40% from 3-point range, and he played limited minutes off the bench. The Wolverines focused on physical, lengthy frontcourt players who helped provide for high efficiency around the rim. They also finished No. 1 in defensive efficiency per KenPom rankings, a nod that defense, in fact, wins championships. If you look at Louisville’s roster construction so far, Pat Kelsey is following this same strategy to a tee.
Yes, Louisville may not have the sharpshooters we are all used to seeing in the old Pat Kelsey system. However, it is abundantly clear that Kelsey is shifting his approach, both offensively and defensively, to keep up with the trends that follow championship-winning squads. It will be up to Kelsey and his staff to see these shifts in philosophy to fruition and get the most out of the players they are bringing in. It is a pivotal year for Kelsey at Louisville, but the hot start this offseason shows that Kelsey is making the changes required to get Louisville to a championship level once again.
